Welcome to the Housing Choice Voucher Program!
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The purpose of this program is to provide safe and sanitary housing to very-low, and extremely low-income households in the private rental market.
One of the premier aspects of the Housing Choice Voucher Program is that it gives the participants the ability to choose their own home. Doing this means that it is more than a standard assistance program. Participants now have more choices as they move beyond their current circumstances, and as a result, new experiences and opportunities are opened to them.
Participants of the program can look for and select a unit in the private rental market within the agency’s jurisdiction, or, they can move outside the agency’s jurisdiction, and receive a rental subsidy based on their income. Landlords who participate in the program can select an eligible participant utilizing their own screening processes and won’t have to sacrifice their tenant quality standards.
For the purposes of this orientation, the term “landlord” refers to an owner or their appointed agent such as:
When a household meets eligibility requirements, they normally pay approximately 30% to 40% of their adjusted monthly income towards monthly rent and utility costs. The program pays the remaining balance directly to the owner or to their appointed agent.
In order for the Housing Choice Voucher Program to be successful, it is vital that a good working relationship is cultivated between the Municipality of Trujillo Alto Housing Authority and the property owners and managers who provide housing for program participants.
This briefing will guide landlords through all the information needed to be successful as renters in the Housing Choice Voucher Program.
