Getting on the Program

To be considered for the program, the applicant must be on a waiting list or applying through a special program and must meet the basic eligibility requirements which include: 

  • Must be considered a family (includes a single family member) 
  • Must not exceed the Extremely Low or Very Low-Income levels 
  • One family member with citizenship and/or eligible immigration status 
  • All Social Security Numbers must be disclosed 
  • All adult family members must have an acceptable criminal background  

If a family chooses to participate in the HCV program, they must meet the HUD eligibility requirements. Eligibility for a housing choice voucher is determined by the agency based on the family size, total annual gross income, and is limited to US citizens and specified categories of non-citizens who have eligible immigration status.  

During the eligibility process, the agency will collect information on your family composition, family’s income, and assetsThis information will be verified with other local and governmental agencies, employers and financial institutions, and the information will be used to determine program eligibility and the amount of the housing assistance payment that will be offered on your behalf.
