HUD defines a reasonable accommodation as a change, exception, or adjustment to a rule, policy, practice, or service that may be necessary for a person with disabilities to have an equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling, including public and common use spaces, or to fulfill their program obligations.
These may include things like:
- Assistance when filling out forms or receiving them in an accessible format such as braille or audio.
- Granting extended time for finding appropriate housing (voucher extension).
- Providing sign language interpretation for meetings
- Approving an additional bedroom in a unit for a live-in aide.
- Providing increased rental assistance if necessary for finding an accessible unit.
If you or someone in your family has a disability that requires one of these special accommodations, you will need to request a Reasonable Accommodation through your PHA. You will be required to provide verification of the disability and the needed accommodation in order to be approved for any changes to your voucher.
